Preparing for Autumn/Fall: Dresses Edition

As Autumn/Fall comes in, the weather is getting cooler and it's time to give your wardrobe a refresh or discover what you already have that can be used to kick your autumnal fashion up a notch!

In this post, I'll be showcasing 36 dresses from multiple brands that are perfect for this season.

Autumnal Colours/Patterns
As I've said before, nature is a great source of inspiration when you're putting together an outfit or interior. In the autumn, nature is changing; the grass is darker and more dull, the sky is more grey, and the leave on the trees are turning a variety of browns, oranges, reds and greens.

More muted colour-schemes look great in the autumn, but bright yellows, reds and oranges can also look great as they imitate the leaves.

Tartan/Plaid, camo and animal prints are great statements in autumn as well as darker florals and ribbed textures.

a. This floral pinny dress is great for this season, featuring subtle orange and brown tints in a rose detail over a dark base. Personally, I'd wear this with a cream cable-knit turtleneck with long sleeves and pair it with black tights and black ankle boots. For accessories I'd probably wear a black bowler hat and either a brown or black leather jacket if it was getting cold.

b. This turtleneck dress is cute and simple with ribbing for some detail and interest. You could wear this year-round, but orange is a great bold colour to wear during the autumn and it has a cute sweater-vibe. I'd pair this with a camo bomber jacket and thigh high/over the knee black chunky boots.

c. A simple t-shirt dress is always a great casual option. This one has a bold motif on the front referencing autumn's special holiday and would look great during the day or at a party. I'd style this dress similarly to the picture shown; a black band choker, a cat ear headband, black leather jacket, fishnet tights in any colour and black boots.

d. Similarly to the first orange dress I showed you, this is a simple and effortless piece that's easy to style. It's a great option if you want to wear a dress without tights when it's colder and also has long sleeves so you don't always need a coat. It's a great statement in a bright orange, and I would style this with a pair of black boots and a black leather or bomber jacket with the sleeves rolled up. In the evening or on a night out, I'd pair it with some open toe black strappy shoes and a black cat-ear headband as a nod to Halloween.

a. This roll-neck knit dress is a great staple for the colder months and can easily be transitioned into winter when that rolls around, so for added warmth I'd wear some sheer tights and a long coat. To finish the look, I'd most likely wear some high heeled ankle boots and a black floppy hat.

b. This dress is a cute and comfy option with a simple stripe pattern that's easy to style. In this case if it wasn't a particularly chilly day, I'd add a long black vest over the top with a belt and some chunky sandals.
You can buy this here!

c. A midi-dress is great for when the weather is changing; it's short enough to allow for some breeze but will generally keep you warmer than a shorter dress or shorts. This simple grey smock has a nice cutout on the back for a bit of interest when not wearing a jacket - I'd wear it with some black tennis shoes and a silky bomber jacket.
You can purchase it here!

d. A tie-waist dress is a perfect option when you're in a rush! It looks styled already so it doesn't require much effort when putting together your outfit. This one is also in a red plaid material which is always looks good in the autumn time. I'd style this with a black beanie, tights and trainers.

Black Sleeveless Lace Up A Line Dressrdre160923130_3Black Deep V Neck Drawstring Mesh Chiffon Dress

a. I really love a top or dress with a lace-up detail and have a few in my wardrobe, so of course I couldn't not include this one! I'd style this with some sheer tights, black over the knee boots and a jacket.
You can purchase it here!

b. This Halloween-themed dress has a flirty skeleton detail on the front, a perfect item to wear for Halloween if you don't want to go all out, but you could easily rock it during the day. I'd pair this with some strappy black heels and bomber jacket, then add a witches hat for a party.
You can buy it here!

c. You could wear this next piece year-round as it's a thin material and mostly sheer. For this season however I'd layer it over a tight black long sleeved turtleneck tucked into shorts, then finish it off with sheer tights, ankle boots and a long coat. This could also be easily worn during the day or night so would be a great staple piece to add to your wardrobe.

d. I love edgier pieces, especially in the colder seasons, so this dress speaks to me as a great option. I'd again layer this over a tight black turtleneck with long sleeves, but then add a black bowler hat, long coat and finish off the look with some black or metallic platform trainers.

a. This dress is special because its stretchy material allows it to double as a pencil skirt! I'd style this by layering it over a cream turtleneck with long sleeves (or use it as a skirt with the same top), then pair it with thigh high/over the knee boots and a deep red beret.

b. This stretchy sheer leopard print dress is perfect to layer and add interest to your outfit. I'd layer this over a black sleeveless or strapless mini dress, then add a long black leopard print coat and black chunky ankle boots.

c. I love how sultry yet elegant this dress is. It features a floral cross to cover your chest in perfect autumnal colours, and would look great for a night out or layered during the day. I'd wear this dress with a red tartan coat and chunky lace-up boots in red also.

d. Oversized items have been "huge" (get it?) in the fashion industry recently and this dress is perfect for this trend and this season with its oversized style, long sleeves and burnt orange plaid pattern. This would look great with a boxy black coat, cape or leather jacket, and could be cinched in at the waist with a belt if you'd prefer a more hourglass shape.

a. A boxy tunic dress like this is always a cute and simple style reminiscent of the 60s. It's in a autumnal colour scheme with tartan, has some decently-sized pockets and sleeves to give some warmth to your arms. I'd wear this with a long grey coat, black choker, sheer tights and some black ankle boots.

b. A skater dress has a fun and flirty shape that looks great on all body types. This one has 3/4 length sleeves for some warmth and adds detail with a sweet crochet peter pan collar. I'd wear this with a cropped denim jacket and over the knee black boots with a chunky heel.

You can purchase this here!

c. This tunic dress is again a great item to have in your wardrobe, especially for the colder months. This red and blue check pattern with white threading is perfect for autumn and would transition effortlessly into winter. It also has a nice choker detail and flattering v neck shape which is very in style right now. I'd brighten this up a bit by layering it over a long sleeve white jumper (either with a matching v or turtleneck style) with bell sleeves for a more 70s vibe. Then I'd finish the look with thick black tights and a black pair of chunky heels with an ankle strap.

d. Similar to the previous dress in shape, this more fitted velvet dress is a great piece as velvet is very on trend this season. I'd style this with long black cardigan under a long black mohair coat (both a similar length to the dress), sheer tights and black heeled ankle boots.

MISS SELFRIDGE

a. This cami slip dress has a beautiful floral bird print and can easily transition between night and day. For day time I'd pair this with a black choker with pearl detail, a faux fur dark brown coat, sheer tights and some black closed-toe flats with an ankle strap.

b. Bohemian-style dresses look great year-round and this khaki one draws my attention for its subtle details like crochet straps, simple embroidery and sheer panelling. I'd wear this over a dark brown turtleneck with bell sleeves and finish with some brown sandals and a floppy hat.

c. This wrap dress would be great for the office and could easily transition into the evening with it's sophisticated shape and burgundy colour. I'd wear this with sheer tights, black ankle boots and black beret - then if it was cold I'd layer over a long black mac.

c. Another bohemian-style dress in "nude", this is a pretty and floaty choice that would work perfectly for a formal event like a autumn wedding. For everyday wear I'd style this with a brown beret or floppy hat, brown flat ankle boots and a brown-red check cape coat.

RIVER ISLAND

a. Wrap dresses are very in fashion right now and this dark green one is perfect for the autumn. I'd wear this over a tight black turtleneck and sheer tights, then finish with heeled black ankle boots and a black duster coat.

b. This peter pan collar swing dress is definitely a statement piece and definitely not a way to play it safe with your style! I personally love the huge array of patterns and it's nod to autumn with animal and floral prints. Personally I'd style this with a black leather jacket, sheer tights and some chunky black heels with an ankle strap. Why not even add a black beret for some extra flare?
